Privacy policy

This policy covers the ClipToVocab app for Android, the website at cliptovocab.com and the service behind them. It is written to be read, not skimmed past. If anything here is unclear, write to us at support@cliptovocab.com.

Who runs ClipToVocab

ClipToVocab is run by Narsing Itkampalli, an individual based in Hyderabad, Telangana, India (“we”, “us”). For India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, we are the Data Fiduciary for the personal data described here.

The short version

  • You sign in with Google. We get your name, email address and profile picture from Google, and nothing else from your Google account.
  • We keep what you do in the app (videos watched, words saved, lessons, streaks) so it is there on every device and so we can suggest what to learn next.
  • What you post (comments, sentences, stories) is seen by other learners, as your privacy settings allow.
  • Sentences you write are sent to Google’s Gemini AI for feedback.
  • We do not sell your data. We do not share it with advertisers. Ads in the app come from Google AdMob, which has its own rules (below).
  • You can delete your account at any time, in the app or on the website.

What we collect, and why

Your account

When you sign in with Google, Google tells us your name, email address, an account ID and your profile picture. We copy the picture to our own storage so it loads quickly. We give you a username, which you can change.

You can add a bio, interests and learning preferences (your goals and level). These are optional.

We use these to create your account, sign you in, show your profile to other learners as your privacy settings allow, and recommend videos and lessons.

What you do in the app

  • Watching: which videos and shorts you watch and for how long, which words you tap, and what you like, save, add to Watch later or put in a collection.
  • Learning: the words you save, the lessons you take, your answers and scores, XP, level, streak, streak freezes, league, daily quests, boosters, gems, energy and badges.
  • Settings: your privacy choices, notification choices, the mascot who reads meanings and other preferences.

We use this to keep your progress the same on every device, to build lessons from the words you saved, to run streaks, quests and leagues, and to rank what we suggest to you. Visitors who are not signed in are counted by a random ID made on their device, not by name.

What you write

  • Sentences in lessons, comments, replies, stories and other Moments, and reports you send about content.
  • Questions you ask our support in the help centre, and our answers.

What you post publicly is shown to other learners as your privacy settings allow. Sentences and comments are sent to Google Gemini (below) for feedback and for an automatic check that they keep to our rules. Reports are read by us to keep ClipToVocab safe.

Your devices

  • An install ID made by the app, and the device’s type, operating system, app version and, for the website, browser. These name your devices under Settings, Security, and tell an old app when it must update.
  • The IP address each sign-in comes from. Settings, Security shows it shortened (like 203.0.113.x). We use it to protect your account.
  • A push token, if you allow notifications, so we can send replies, follows, badges and support answers to your phone.
  • If ads are shown, Google AdMob may use your device’s advertising ID (see Ads).

Purchases

If you buy VIP, Google Play takes the payment. We receive the order ID, the plan, the dates and a purchase token so we can give you VIP, renew it and show your receipts. We never see your card, UPI or bank details. If we later take payments on the website, Razorpay will take them the same way, and this policy will say so before it starts.

When you delete your account

If you tell us why you are leaving, we keep that reason, without your name, to make ClipToVocab better.

What we do not collect

We do not collect your location, contacts, messages, photos (other than a profile picture you choose), microphone recordings or files. We do not use crash-reporting tools at the moment; if we add one, this policy will say so first.

Who helps us run ClipToVocab

These companies process data for us, only to provide their service:

  • Google Sign-In signs you in. It tells us who you are on Google (see “Your account”).
  • Google Gemini API gives feedback on sentences you write and checks comments. It receives the sentence or comment and the word it is about, never your name or email.
  • Google AdMob shows ads, and the consent form in Europe and the UK. It receives device and ad data, as Google describes.
  • Google Play Billing sells VIP subscriptions and tells us about your purchase.
  • Firebase Cloud Messaging and Expo’s push service deliver notifications to your phone. They receive your push token and the notification.
  • Cloudflare hosts this website, stores profile pictures and audio, and forwards email sent to us.
  • YouTube plays videos in its own embedded player, and collects what its player collects.
  • Razorpay (later, for website payments only) will take payments made on the website.

About Gemini: we currently use Google’s free tier of the Gemini API. Under Google’s terms for that tier, Google may use what is sent to improve its products, and people at Google may read it. So please do not put personal information (your phone number, address, other people’s names) in the sentences you write.

Some of these companies process data outside India. They are bound by their own privacy and security commitments.

We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it with anyone else, except when the law requires it (for example, a valid order from a court or a government authority in India), or to protect people from harm.

YouTube

ClipToVocab uses YouTube API Services. Videos play in YouTube’s own embedded player, and we use YouTube’s public information about videos (titles, channels, thumbnails). We do not access your YouTube account.

By watching videos in ClipToVocab you agree to the YouTube Terms of Service. YouTube’s player may place or read cookies and similar technologies on your device. How Google uses that information is described in the Google Privacy Policy.

You can remove ClipToVocab’s access to your Google account at any time on Google’s third-party connections page. That signs you out of ClipToVocab; it does not delete your ClipToVocab account (see Deleting your account).

Ads

The free version of ClipToVocab may show ads: after some lessons, between shorts, and when you choose to watch an ad for gems or energy. VIP members do not see ads after lessons or in Shorts. Ads come from Google AdMob. Google may use your device’s advertising ID and other information to show and measure ads, as described in how Google uses information from apps that use its services.

In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, the app asks for your consent before personalised ads, using Google’s consent form. You can change your choice later. Anywhere, you can reset or delete your advertising ID in your phone’s settings (Settings, Google, Ads on most Android phones).

Deleting your account

You can delete your account in the app (Profile, Settings, Account, Delete account) or on the website. If you cannot do either, email support@cliptovocab.com from the email address of your account.

When you delete it:

  • At once: your name, email address, username, bio, interests and profile picture are erased from your account. You are signed out on every device, your push tokens are removed, any VIP renewal is stopped, and you can never sign in to that account again. Signing in later with the same Google account starts a new, empty account.
  • What stays, without your name: your learning records stay on an account that has no name, email or way to sign in, so totals and leaderboards for other learners stay correct. Comments, sentences and stories you posted stay where they are, shown as from “Deleted user”, so other people’s replies still make sense. If you want them gone, delete them in the app first.
  • What we must keep: purchase records, for as long as the law requires (see above).
  • Your support questions are deleted with the account.

Your rights

Under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, you have the right to:

  • know what personal data we hold about you and how we use it,
  • correct it or complete it (most of it you can edit yourself in the app),
  • erase it, by deleting your account,
  • withdraw your consent, by deleting your account (you cannot use ClipToVocab without the data it needs to work),
  • nominate someone to use these rights for you if you die or become unable to, and
  • have your complaint heard, first by our Grievance Officer and then, if you are not satisfied, by the Data Protection Board of India.

If you live in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you also have rights under the GDPR, including to get a copy of your data and to object. Write to us to use any of these rights. We will answer within 30 days.

Children

ClipToVocab is not for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you are under 18, use ClipToVocab only with your parent’s or guardian’s permission. If you believe a child under 13 is using ClipToVocab, write to us and we will delete the account.

Keeping your data safe

Everything between the app, the website and our server travels encrypted (HTTPS). Sign-in tokens are kept in your phone’s secure storage or in protected browser cookies. Access to our systems is limited to the people who run ClipToVocab. No system is perfectly secure, and if a breach affects your data, we will tell you and the authorities as the law requires.

Cookies on this website

This website does not use advertising or tracking cookies, and it does not run analytics. If you sign in on the help centre or the account deletion page, our server sets sign-in cookies so it knows it is you. They are removed when you sign out.

Changes to this policy

When we change this policy, we change the date at the top. If a change matters to how your data is used, we will tell you in the app before it applies.
